A great summer tagging season off North Stradbroke Island in 2013

The 2012-2013 summer tagging season was a very successful one, with 18 leopard sharks being tagged at an aggregation site off North Stradbroke Island in Southern Queensland.

The acoustic tags we are using have a battery life of about 10 years, which means we are looking forward to a wealth of terrific data over the coming years. The tags, or transmitters, are surgically implanted into the shark. Their signal can be detected by acoustic receivers up and down the Queensland and New South Wales coast.

The leopard sharks were caught by either snorkelling or SCUBA diving. Catching the sharks involves 2 people guiding the shark to the surface.
